A quick introduction of who I am, why I love what I do and my journey of growth as an architectural renderer.

Seeing as how I found myself quickly beginning to need a career, I have decided to pursue a skill I have enjoyed refining during my time in school for Interior Design: rendering. Architectural visualization, 3D Rendering, Architectural Illustrations and many other combinations of titles all describing the same thing: “someone who practices the art of creating two-dimensional images or animations showing the attributes of a proposed architectural design”. Ie, the person who creates the pretty pictures of future buildings or proposed interiors that are frequently used in marketing or promotions so that everyone can see what will eventually be produced. From the first, horrible render I have ever made until now, I have grown so much. The more I learn, the more I get excited to keep growing and improving. So here I will be documenting my learnings and research in the pursuit of constantly improving.

Summer of 2017, I managed to stumble my way into a job where I was able to create the digital models of products the business was selling. The business I worked for primarily sold large structures such as gazebos or pergolas, but did not have a showroom that people could visit in order to visualize their projects. Since these were large, expensive investments, people wanted to see what they were purchasing and how it was going to look with their homes.

Over the course of the next year, I made the digital models of all the structures and a large portion of their furniture collection. I created scenes and built the products exactly to specification – down to the individual roof tiles and nails. I would also help render projects for specific customers and create models of their structure and their house to give them a visual.

“I loved this job because of how excited people would get when they were able to have a glimpse of their future purchase.”

Years later, I think back often to this job and all I learned while I was there. I loved this job because of how excited people would get when they were able to have a glimpse of their future purchase. I also loved the creative freedom I had to make these images. Because of this job, I wanted to learn more about rendering and fine tune my skills. I was inspired to become better at rendering and study what goes into a truly successful render. This blog will be a place I will be sharing my research on the finer points of rendering. So for anyone who is ready for a beginners crash course on rendering and what you need to know, be sure to check in regularly for new posts. Welcome!
